English as a Foreign Language

Intensive English Institute

The Intensive English Institute provides a challenging and supportive educational environment where learners can gain proficiency in English for academic, professional, or other purposes. IEI’s program is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation.

Office of Student Financial Aid

Availability of scholarships and financial aid will vary significantly from individual to individual. Students are encouraged to consult with the Office of Student Financial Aid regarding which aid options they qualify for.

University Bursar

University Bursar is part of University of Illinois System offices and serves as the accounts receivable department for all three universities, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Students should visit the University Bursar website for guidance on making tuition and fee payments and questions about their student account.

National and International Scholarship Program

The National and International Scholarship Program administers nationally competitive awards related to study, research, and teaching—often in foreign countries—for Illinois students. NISP also provides advice and feedback throughout the application process, helping students to become more competitive for these scholarships.

Illinois International Scholarships and Awards

Illinois International administers several study abroad scholarships and international fellowships that support student mobility around the world.

Jean M. Due and Marianne Ferber International Research Award

The Jean M. Due and Marianne Ferber International Research Award was established through generous gifts from Professor Emerita Marianne Ferber and Professor Emerita Jean Due. The award provides financial support ($1,000) for individuals from developing countries conducting dissertation research on gender and development issues, particularly research that promises to make a significant contribution to the improvement of women’s lives and gender equity in the developing world.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be from a developing country and demonstrate financial need.
  • Conducting dissertation research on gender and development issues.
  • The award is intended for current or newly accepted international graduate students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. All genders welcome to apply.

Deadline and Application

Applications are due by March 15, 2025.

Jean M. Due and Marianne Ferber International Research Award

The Nelle M. Signor Graduate Scholarship in International Relations is funded through a generous gift from the late Nelle M. Signor. The award provides $2,000 for outstanding Illinois graduate students engaged research in international relations (both in the U.S. and abroad).

Eligibility

All University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign doctoral students who have completed their required coursework and preliminary exams for their degree and wish to conduct research abroad may apply. The scholarship can be used for research during the summer or academic year.

Preference is given to students studying international relations, although students of all disciplines are encouraged to apply, provided that their research includes an international dimension. Preference will be given to unmarried, graduate students at the request of the donor.

Study Abroad Scholarships

Illinois International Donor Scholarships

Illinois International’s donor-funded and memorial scholarships are available to students participating in approved study abroad programs.

The Fall Cycle provides scholarships for winter and spring semester study abroad programs. The application opens in mid-April and is due on September 15. The Spring Cycle provides scholarships for summer, fall semester, and academic year study abroad programs. The application opens in mid-November and is due on February 15.

Applications must be submitted through My Study Abroad. Students do not have to determine which scholarships they are eligible for when they apply. All students are automatically considered for all scholarships for which they qualify.

Illinois for Illinois (I4I) Scholarship

The I4I Scholarship is supported by a student-initiated fee, reflecting a longstanding commitment to making global learning accessible. All undergraduates studying abroad on an approved program are eligible to apply.

The I4I Scholarship is awarded in three different categories: General Merit, Financial Need, and Underrepresented. Students traveling to non-traditional locations receive some special consideration. Students can be considered for all of the categories for which they are eligible but will only receive an award in one category.

Many colleges and area studies centers offer scholarship opportunities specifically for students participating in study abroad. The following funding opportunities are available from the academic colleges and departments at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

International Student Support

As an international student, financing your education can be a difficult task and most financial assistance in the United States is restricted to U.S. citizens or legal residents.

International Student and Scholar Services has limited funding available to assist international students who currently attend the university and are experiencing unexpected short-term or emergency financial hardship.
