BRIDGE
The Birmingham-Illinois Partnership for Discovery, Engagement & Education (known as “BRIDGE”) was established by the University of Birmingham (UK) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (USA) has been flourishing for more than a decade.
INSPIRE Alliance
The Illinois-Sweden Program for Educational and Research Exchange (INSPIRE) is a collaborative, educational alliance between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, and Karolinska Institutet.
UNIQ Trilateral Alliance
The UNIQ (Universities: National Taiwan University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Kyushu University) Trilateral Alliance between Kyushu University (Kyushu), National Taiwan University (NTU), and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (Illinois), established in 2024, represents a unique collaboration among three globally renowned institutions.
Kyushu University
Kyushu University in Japan has been one of the most important partners for University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in carbon-neutral energy research. The long-term partnership has accelerated to include new focus areas and a broader strategic partnership.
National Taiwan University
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and National Taiwan University (NTU) have partnered to enhance the value of multidisciplinary research between both institutions.
Process and Criteria for Establishing Partnerships
Global Relations, in close collaboration with the Illinois colleges and units, guides partnership development on behalf of the university. Campus units wishing to establish a new agreement or partnership should ensure that all relevant parties in their department, college, or unit have been consulted and support the proposed agreement as early in the process as possible. External institutions wishing to initiate an agreement or partnership with the university should first reach out to the department they wish to collaborate with to ensure there is mutual interest in forming a relationship or contact Global Relations directly.
Successful collaborations must have:
- Mutual alignment between each participating institutions’ strategic goals, including those of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
- Mutual value of the linkage to the potential partner and/or Illinois.
- Institutional support and commitment from the participating Illinois college or unit.
- Demonstrated sustainable capacity to support the longevity of the partnership.
- Commitment to a balanced exchange of students between institutions (for proposed student exchange agreements).
- Verifiable accreditation from either the appropriate national governing body or an external accrediting agency, including sample transcripts in English from the partner institutions (required for all student mobility agreements).

Colleges and departments are encouraged to develop metrics in collaboration with prospective partner as part of the agreement development process. The metrics should determine how performance, success, and challenges will be measured to ensure outcomes remain mutually beneficial for all parties.
Global Education and Training
Gain access to the cutting-edge knowledge, techniques, and practices of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign by developing a high-quality, customized training program with Global Education and Training.
As the gateway to Illinois expertise for non-degree seeking students, scholars, executives, and administrators, partnering with GET allows external partners to work with highly respected professors and administrators, campus units, and local businesses to develop successful capacity building opportunities for their organizations.
All participants who successfully complete a GET program will receive a certificate of recognition and join a 10,000+ network of past program participants.

Campus Visits for Current and Prospective Partners
Global Relations is available to welcome visiting delegations for current and prospective partners as well as support colleges and departments as they host visiting scholars, prospective or current partners, or consular corps on campus.
In order to ensure that delegations are connected with the appropriate departments, units, or faculty members, both external delegations and Illinois faculty and staff should use complete the Visit Request Form to inquire about possible visit opportunities.

Multinational collaboration shines in international sustainability competition
Students from around the world gathered online for the fifth annual Reimagine Our Future sustainability competition, founded at Illinois and now drawing participation from global partnerships.
Illinois, Birmingham announce 2025-2026 BRIDGE Seed Fund Grant recipients
Fourteen new projects will receive funding from the BRIDGE Seed Fund during the 2025-2026 academic year to pursue joint research on a variety of topics.
