To address the burgeoning rise in demand from international students seeking an Illinois education, Illinois International launched its first in-country, pre-arrival orientations in China in 2014, with the addition of an orientation in Korea in 2015. These sessions take place in the summer before students' journey to Illinois.
The orientations provide participants with important information about immigration processes and regulations, academic advising, career services, housing options, student organizations, and the transition to American classroom culture. They also provide parents of incoming students an opportunity to meet and interact with some of the key individuals who will be facilitating their student’s transition to college in the United States. The program also serves as a platform for incoming students to engage in conversation with campus leaders, advisors, Illinois students, and alumni—serving as a precursor to the on-campus orientation that takes place in the fall, one week prior to the beginning of fall semester classes, once new students are on campus.
During the afternoon-long program, presentations are complemented with opportunities to ask questions and talk to current students and alumni. Illinois International is pleased to receive the support and participation of our Chinese Student and Scholar Association and Korean Student Association, whose representatives are on hand to give first-hand accounts and advice to students during the session.
