The comprehensive internationalization of a university campus must start with a vision of fostering an institutional culture that promotes understanding and appreciation of global issues within the campus, the community, and the world, and fully integrate that understanding into the curriculum and co-curriculum.
To help Illinois reach its goal of internationalization, Illinois International created the position of “Coordinator for Intercultural Initiatives” in 2015. This role aims to facilitate cooperation between units, departments, and colleges across the Urbana campus regarding matters of internationalization. The Coordinator also develops, promotes, and assists programming aimed at academic and social integration of international students, as well as engagement of domestic students with global and international dimensions, both in and out of the classroom.
Furthermore, the Coordinator helps guide Illinois International in its mission to provide leadership in matters of intercultural competency for faculty and staff through training workshops and faculty development sessions, developed in close cooperation with the academic colleges and student affairs.
Finally, the Coordinator also serves as the head delegate for Illinois International’s Pre-Arrival Orientations in China and Korea, during which newly admitted international students are prepared for a smooth transition to life in the United States and have the opportunity to engage with campus leaders, current students, and alumni.
