Upcoming GET Programs

Global Education and Training is now accepting applications for the following summer 2017 programs. Each program focuses on specific topics of interest and offers classroom learning experiences in collaboration with Illinois colleges and faculty across the Urbana campus, as well as business and cultural visits.

Participants will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience about academic life and culture at a top American university. Illinois is situated in a vibrant community, rich in culture, with plenty of activities suitable to the interests of students and professionals. All classes for the listed programs will be taught in English and will culminate with a final exam or presentation. Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Certificate of Recognition.

Accounting & Finance Program 2017

This program will offer students an in-depth study of complex accounting and finance topics. Students will choose two out of three courses on the subjects of Accounting Theory, Financial Management, and Entrepreneurship. GET staff will plan cultural events and accompany the group on field trips to famous modern and historical attractions in Springfield, the capital of Illinois. Following the end of the program, students have the option to take a 7-day group trip with a chaperone from GET. Students will visit key tourist sites, world-class universities, and government organizations in Chicago, Washington D.C. and New York City before departing the United States. Students will receive grades for the courses in this program.

Agriculture Management Program 2017

Students participating in this program will be presented with topics ranging from international trade to current affairs affecting U.S. and global agriculture. Students will visit local farms and participate in meetings with executives from key Illinois agribusiness corporations that are prized for their economic development strategies, social responsibility, and employee satisfaction. Visits to various companies and banks provide a great opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of U.S. business. GET will also plan cultural events and accompany the group on field trips to famous modern and historical attractions in Chicago and Springfield.

Civil Engineering Program 2017

Developed in conjunction with the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois, this program will provide students with introductory courses on Steel Structures and Earthquake Engineering. Classroom discussion will be led by professors from the top-ranked civil engineering program in the U.S. GET staff will plan cultural events and accompany the group on field trips to famous modern and historical attractions in Chicago and Springfield, the capital of Illinois. Students will receive grades for the courses in this program.

Economics Program 2017

This program will encourage and lead students through discussions of complex issues relating to Development Economics and Money and Banking. Students will have the opportunity to meet with executives from the Federal Reserve Bank. GET staff will also plan cultural events and accompany the group on field trips to famous modern and historical attractions in Springfield, the capital of Illinois. Following the end of the program, students will have the option to take a 7-day group trip where they will visit key tourist sites, world-class universities, and government organizations in Chicago, Washington D.C. and New York City before departing the United States. Students will receive grades for the courses in this program.

General Education Program 2017

Students participating in this program will be presented with topics ranging from Design Thinking and IT Design to an Introduction to American Film. Students will visit financial institutions, Fortune 500 companies, research centers, and have the opportunity to meet with current PhD students to learn about research methodology. Visits to various companies and banks provide a great opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of U.S. business. Students will also have time to meet with University of Illinois Graduate College and career placement representatives to gain a better understanding of how to apply to U.S. universities for graduate school and what to expect when searching for a job. GET will plan cultural events and accompany the group on field trips to famous modern and historical attractions in Chicago and Springfield, the capital of Illinois.

Heritage, Tourism, & Development Program 2017

Developed in conjunction with the Collaborative for Cultural Heritage Management and Policy (CHAMP) at the University of Illinois, this program will provide students with a unique general education learning experience focused on theoretical and practical aspects of management in heritage, tourism and development. American professors who are experts in the fields of Anthropology and Architecture (Historic Preservation) will lead classroom discussion on cultural heritage management in the U.S. and around the globe. Together with GET staff, they will also plan visits to local cultural sites and accompany the group on field trips to famous modern and historical attractions in Chicago and Springfield, the capital of Illinois. Students will receive grades for the courses in this program.

Intensive English Institute 2017 (For University Instructors Only)

Developed in conjunction with the Intensive English Institute at the University of Illinois, this program will provide university instructors the opportunity to spend two months improving instructional English in their own field of study and learning pedagogical best practices to incorporate active learning and critical thinking in the classroom. Participants will also have time to conduct research using the University of Illinois library system (3rd largest in the U.S.), observe lectures given by current University of Illinois faculty, and regularly meet with conversation partners from the community. Each participant will prepare short lessons in their field and present them in English to the class. Cultural field trips will be organized to Chicago, St. Louis, and Springfield, the capital of Illinois.

Information Science & Engineering Program 2017

Students will be encouraged and led by Illinois professors through discussions of complex engineering and information science topics, with emphasis on Control Systems and Network Analysis. GET staff will plan cultural events and accompany the group on field trips to famous modern and historical attractions in Springfield, the capital of Illinois. Following the end of the program, students will have the option to take a 7-day group trip with a chaperone from GET. Students will visit key tourist sites, world-class universities, and government organizations in Chicago, Washington D.C. and New York City before departing the United States. Students will receive grades for the courses in this program.

Sport Management Across Cultures Program 2017

Developed in conjunction with the European Union Center and the Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism at the University of Illinois, this program will provide students with in-depth discussion on Managing Sport across the Atlantic: Developing Athletes, and Sport for Development in the U.S. and Beyond. Following two weeks of classroom discussion on sport management with emphasis on U.S. and international perspectives, faculty experts will chaperone a guided one-week instructional bus tour of key sports sites in Indianapolis and Chicago, to include NBA, WNBA, NFL, and motorsports. The program will also feature visits to local cultural sites and a group field trip to famous modern and historical attractions in Springfield, the capital of Illinois.

Zast High School Stem Summer Program 2017 (For Chinese High School Students Only)

Developed in conjunction with the Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology (ZAST) and WorldShaper Fellows program in China, this program will provide students with a unique opportunity to experience academic life at a top U.S. university while studying topics in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Information Science at the University of Illinois boasts the top-ranked program in the U.S., and Engineering at Illinois is ranked in the top 5 in the country. The program will include interactive classroom learning experiences and lab visits in topics like electrical and computer engineering, information science, data science, and control systems, as well as instructional sessions on academic writing, public speaking, and preparing for the applications and admissions process at U.S. universities. The program will culminate in a guided group research capstone competition, the “Smart Home Innovation Challenge,” with student project results highlighted on Global Education and Training web site and blog. GET staff will also plan company visits and cultural events, and accompany the group on field trips to famous modern and historical attractions in Chicago and Springfield, the capital of Illinois. Top performing students will have the opportunity to receive a letter from a University of Illinois official attesting to their achievements in the program.
