Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security
The Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security (ACDIS) is an interdisciplinary venture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that facilitates objective research, academics, and outreach about international security issues within the academic and policymaking communities. The program was founded at Illinois in 1978.
ACDIS offers presentations and discussions by scholars and policymakers to the university community and to the public on a wide range of security-related topics. ACDIS also collaborates with other campus units and departments for symposiums, teach-ins, and workshops that highlight recent events that threaten the security of the environment and populations around the world.
ACDIS offers a Certificate in Global Security for undergraduate students who complete the requirements needed to acquire a foundational knowledge within the multi-disciplinary field of global security studies. Over 160 students have received this certification since the program’s inception in 2010.
ACDIS pursues interdisciplinary research initiatives through developing grant proposals, collaborating with faculty and students, and administering grant projects. ACDIS is currently developing an interdisciplinary project to study climate action policy and international policy negotiations.
ACDIS employs student interns when possible. Students are actively involved in many of the daily operations of ACDIS such as social media, event planning, research, conducting interviews with experts and speakers, and developing website content.
ACDIS publishes policy briefs and papers that cover the field of security studies. Expert analysis and commentaries by scholars are published on the ACDIS website.
The ACDIS Security Studies Group is a Register Student Organization (RSO) dedicated to enhancing student inquiry into security studies and careers. It offers UIUC students the networking and pre-professional training they need in order to succeed in future careers such as intelligence, diplomacy, academia, policy, and other related fields. Alongside career prep, the RSO hosts social and outreach events, helping members form a network of peers.
The Illini Journal of International Security (IJOIS) is a peer-reviewed academic, under-graduate journal created and led my members of ACDIS associated students. IJOIS publishes full journals of around six research articles from undergraduates at UIUC every semester.
