Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship

FLAS Fellowships support graduate and undergraduate study in modern foreign languages in combination with area studies, international studies, or international or area aspects of professional studies.

FLAS Fellowships are currently offered by Illinois’ Center for African Studies (CAS), Center for Global Studies (CGS), Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), European Union Center (EUC), and Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC). If approval is obtained, FLAS Fellowships may be used to study abroad.

Summer FLAS awards are designed to support summer modern language study. These awards are given only for intensive language classes that teach the equivalent of an academic year language class. Authorization must be obtained in order to take a course not offered in an approved US-based institution. Students receive a $2,500 stipend and up to $5,000 for tuition and fees. Summer FLAS awards are to be used during summer and cannot be deferred.

Academic Year FLAS awards are for graduate, undergraduate, and professional school students to study modern foreign languages and related area or international studies. Undergraduate students receive a $5,000 stipend and up to $10,000 for tuition and fees. Graduate students receive a $15,000 stipend and a tuition waiver (eligibility for tuition waivers vary by home department and school) or up to $18,000 for tuition and fees. FLAS awards cannot be deferred.
